The ICL King of Daytona Series launched its third season with a wild opening chapter in the at , and it delivered exactly what this championship is built on: constant momentum swings, points on the line every lap, and a finish that reshuffled everything in an instant. With the King of Daytona crown decided by total points across multiple divisions, Race 1 wasn’t just about winning the opener — it was about building an early foundation before the series shifts into the next car.

At the center of it was Doug Welch, who finally cashed in a moment that’s been a long time coming. Welch scored his first career ICL win after 141 starts, a huge breakthrough for one of the series’ most familiar veterans. Even more impressive, he stacked maximum points when it mattered most: Welch grabbed the win (12 points) and also earned the 1-point bonus for fastest qualifying time, giving him the perfect start to the season points chase. After years of knocking on the door — including two runner-up finishes — Welch left Daytona with the kind of result that can change the tone of an entire season.

While Welch ended the night out front, the race’s turning points came in waves. One major storyline hit on lap six heading into turn three, when a front runner’s night took a hit after contact involving Davis Warren, abruptly changing the shape of the lead pack. Then the biggest moment of the entire event arrived coming to the two-to-go, when race leader Benjamin West went around after contact with Davis, sparking the incident that collected a large portion of the field and flipped the running order. When the dust settled, Welch emerged with clean air and closed the deal from there.

Behind the winner, the opener produced a stacked top five and a couple of major movers. Mario DiNatale climbed from 10th to 2nd, and Benedict Ringer charged from 13th to 5th — the biggest position gains of the night, both moving up eight spots to put themselves right into the early-season conversation. Dennis Holley rounded out the podium and showed elite pace, ripping the fastest lap of the race at 58.027 to back up his P3 with pure speed. Benjamin West and Ringer completed the top five, and that group now sets the early benchmark for what it takes to score big points in this multi-division format.

Even with the late chaos, there were still clear performance markers worth circling. Welch controlled the majority of the race at the front, leading 8 laps, while Dusty Fincher also spent time out in front with 2 laps led — proof that this opener wasn’t a one-driver show before the finish turned. And while some drivers gained big, others had a rougher night in the draft: Fincher took the biggest hit in track position, sliding from 3rd to 13th, a tough swing in a format where every point matters and there’s no time to wait for “next week” to recover.

With six divisions still ahead, the points storyline is already forming. Welch’s combination of win + fast qualifying time is exactly the kind of “bonus-point” edge that can separate a champion once the series stacks results across ARCA, Legends, Trucks, Xfinity, Next Gen, and Gen 4. Meanwhile, DiNatale, Holley, West, and Ringer put themselves in striking distance immediately — and the drivers who limited the damage on a chaotic night may look back at this opener as a critical survival points haul when the season reaches its final rounds.
