ICL EVENTS & RACE FORMATS
The iRacing Champions League offers a variety of hosted events and championship formats across multiple cars, tracks, and divisions. Most ICL events are open to all drivers, with VIP membership only required for benefits such as payout eligibility and provisionals where offered.
This page explains how ICL events work, what types of series are offered, how points and payouts are handled, and where drivers can find race announcements and event details. Because the ICL schedule is based on admin availability, event dates and lobby times may vary, but all official announcements are guaranteed to be posted in the Discord.
RULES
The following rules apply to ICL events unless otherwise noted in a specific race announcement or lobby. Drivers are expected to race respectfully, follow event procedures, and understand that race control may make judgment calls when situations are not fully covered by written rules.
NOTABLE RULES
SETUPS
-
Fixed setup
FLAG RULES
-
No yellows
-
This does not mean anything goes. Drivers are still expected to race cleanly.
-
Drivers who cause avoidable incidents or race in a reckless manner may be removed or banned.
-
If a driver is taken out during the race, results may be adjusted after the event through penalties issued by race control.
WALL RIDING
-
Wall riding is not permitted in the ICL.
-
If a driver clearly uses the wall in a “Ross Chastain” style move to gain an advantage, that driver will be disqualified and may also be suspended or banned from the league.
At this time, ICL will not publish a strict written definition of wall riding, because there are too many factors and unique situations that can affect each incident. Not every driver who makes contact with the wall will be penalized. However, if a driver uses the wall and gains an advantage, that driver is putting the outcome in the hands of race control for a judgment call. Drivers who want to avoid penalties should stay off the wall.
LAP TRAFFIC
-
Lap traffic should pull in if within 10 car lengths of the leader.
-
Lap cars are not committed to continue racing at speed in front of the leaders.
RACE STARTS
-
Starts are controlled by the leader, not the iRacing start command.
-
If a driver beats the leader to the line, or makes it three-wide in any capacity with the row ahead before reaching the start/finish line, that driver is at risk of penalty or disqualification.
-
If a driver beats the leader to the line because of contact or pressure from a car behind, that driver has one lap to give the position back or may be penalized.
Black flags for jump starts will not be cleared by default. In special cases, race control may choose to clear them. Examples include:
-
A wreck occurring before the green flag
-
A driver being noticeably off the pace
-
A noticeable driver error causing another driver to receive a black flag unfairly
These situations, along with any resulting penalties, will be handled at the sole discretion of race control.
If a driver fails to grid, or is removed before the start of the race, the lineup is not crisscrossed. Instead, drivers in the row behind the missing driver move straight ahead. For example, if the original pole sitter does not grid, the driver originally scheduled to start third will inherit the pole position.
MISSED STARTS
-
During feature events, if a driver does not grid before the green flag and a provisional starter takes that spot, the original driver may not join the race after the green flag.
PROVISIONALS
-
One ICL Pro Driver per event will receive a provisional.
-
The driver who receives the provisional must be able to grid for the main event.
-
The provisional will be awarded to the Pro Driver who is gridded furthest ahead of the other eligible Pro Drivers.
Drivers can become an ICL Pro Driver through membership.
Additional provisionals may be granted if drivers who originally qualified for the main event fail to make the start. In those situations, additional provisional spots may be awarded to drivers who were gridded but did not transfer through the LCQs. These will be granted in order of starting position.
POINTS STANDINGS TIE BREAKERS
If drivers are tied in the standings, the following tiebreakers will be used in order:
-
Wins
-
Quick Time awards
-
Highest finish
-
Starts
-
Finishing position in the last race
